It's that time of year when most people are busy doing fall house cleaning and deciding what to discard and what to keep.

What better time to have a yard sale! The Olde Brooklyn Park Improvement Association will sponsor a community yard sale at 8 a.m. Saturday. The rain date is Sunday.

Everyone in the community, association members and nonmembers, is invited to set up at home. Come check out the bargains.

The Brooklyn Park Youth Athletic Association will meet at 8:30 p.m. today at the Northern District Police Station on Hammonds Lane.

Members will discuss the soccer tournament and basketball season.

Belle Grove Elementary School news: All orders and cash for school fund-raisers must be returned to the school by tomorrow.

Brooklyn Park Elementary School news: An important volunteer orientation will begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday in the teachers' lounge. If you would like to help the faculty and staff, please mark the orientation on your calendar and donate some of your time.

Brooklyn Park/Lindale Middle Junior High School news: The fall fund-raiser is in progress. Students will be selling sterling silver jewelry and assorted "snack packs." Proceeds will benefit the PTA.

North County High School news: The PTSA will have its first meeting of the school year at 7 p.m. tomorrow in the cafeteria. The meeting will be run as part of Back-to-School Night.

Parents will follow their child's schedule, meeting their teachers and learning about the curriculum. Parents should bring a copy of their child's schedule with them.

* PTSA dues are being collected. Dues are $3 per person or $5 per couple.

* The PTSA will sponsor an indoor flea market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 6. at the school. Tables can be rented for $15.

A 10-week arts and crafts program, sponsored by the county Department of Recreation and Parks, will begin next week at Brooklyn Park Elementary School, 200 14th Ave.

The free sessions for children in kindergarten through third grade run from 3:20 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays. Students in grades four through six will meet from 3:20 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays.

All supplies and materials are provided. Advance registration is required.

Arundel Federal Savings Bank will host a seminar, "Everything You Need to Know About Buying a Home," from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

The seminar is being held at St. John's Christian Day School, 3rd Street and Washburn Avenue. It is free and open to the public.

Discussion will include: dealing with Realtors, household budgeting, types of financing, loan settlement, your relationship with the bank and determining the type of house you can afford.

Harbor Hospital Center news: If you are still struggling with a nicotine habit and serious about quitting, the Center's Breathewell Cessation Program is for you. A free information meeting will be held at 6 p.m. tomorrow.

The eight-week course will begin on Oct. 5. Smokers learn behavior modification and stress management, relaxation techniques and nutritional and exercise planning. Participants will complete the support and educational class the week of the Great American Smoke-out in November.

* The hospital will offer free prostate cancer examinations, from noon to 3 p.m. Wednesday and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

* An internationally recognized authority on destructive cults, Michael Rokos, will speak at Harbor Hospital Center from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Gruehn Building Auditorium.

His presentation, "Reflections on Waco," delves into practice of mind control, or brain-washing.

The lecture is free to the public. A continental breakfast will be served.
