Bill Sedgwick rushed for a school-record 306 yards and scored three touchdowns yesterday to lead Ursinus to a 42-33 Centennial Conference win over host Western Maryland.

Sedgwick put Ursinus ahead for good with his first touchdown, a 53-yard run with 4:03 left in the first quarter that gave the Bears a 14-7 advantage.

The senior running back then added scoring runs of 28 yards in the second quarter and 57 yards in the fourth period. He carried the ball 29 times and broke his own Ursinus single-game rushing record of 227 yards, set last season against Johns Hopkins.

Ursinus broke a five-game losing streak to Western Maryland and won for just the fourth time in the 18-game series (4-13-1). The Bears are 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

Sophomore quarterback Brian Van Deusen (Atholton) engineered a Western Maryland comeback after Ursinus had taken a 28-7 halftime lead. Van Deusen threw touchdown passes of 21 yards to Carmen Felus and 46 yards to Rob Johnson (North Carroll) on back-to-back possessions in the third quarter to pull the Green Terrors (1-2, 0-2) to within 28-20.

Ursinus then regained control when Mark Romano powered in from the 1 with 10 seconds left in the third period. The score was set up by a 44-yard pass to the 2-yard line out of punt formation from Dan Mullen to James Convey.

Johnson scored his third touchdown of the game on a 2-yard run with 10:15 remaining in the game to bring Western Maryland back to 35-26, before Sedgwick sealed the win with his third score.

Alan Pietkiewicz had eight receptions for 128 yards for Western Maryland. Van Deusen had 15 completions in 39 attempts for 256 yards.
