Name: Genevieve E. McCardell, 33, of Owen Brown Village, Columbia.

Hobbies and other activities: Besides volunteering at Parents Anonymous, a statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing and eliminating child abuse, Ms. McCardell enjoys gardening, decorating her new home and taking walks with her 4-year-old son.

Organization's Comments: Ms. McCardell's interest in Parents Anonymous began in 1986 when she attended a workshop for volunteers. She and Elaine Fisher, executive director of Parents Anonymous, began a chapter in the Catonsville area.

1991, Ms. McCardell established a Parents Anonymous Chapter in Columbia at the Meeting House in Oakland Mills. The group meets from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays. For more information about Parents Anonymous' family support services, call (410) 243-7337, the 24-hour stress line number.

She is a dedicated volunteer with a high degree of commitment to helping families strengthen relationships with each other," said Dennis Cardiff, Parents Anonymous' program coordinator. "Genevieve brings in her skills as a counselor and her experience from parenting, when facilitating at Parents Anonymous weekly support meetings. We wouldn't be able to deliver the services PA offers without Genevieve."

Volunteer's Comments: "I strongly believe that the most important influence on a child is the family. My profession is working with children, and if I can empower parents, then that will directly influence children. A parent's ability to set limits, teach values and maintain themselves as positive role models are key factors in successfully raising kids to be productive, happy adults."

About Ms. McCardell: She is a juvenile counselor with the Department of Juvenile Services in Howard County. She moved from Hyattsville to Columbia in 1971. Ms. McCardell is a graduate of Frostburg State College. She is married to Paul M. McCardell and has a 4-year-old son, Patrick, three cats and two parakeets.
