Winter Growth to burn note

A $340,000 note, once owed to the state, is going up in smoke.

Gov. William Donald Schaefer will hand a "golden match" to Winter Growth Inc. today to burn a copy of the loan made to the company in 1988 to pay off construction costs of its Beaverkill Road center.

"We had a $340,000 gap in the funding needed for the building," said Marge Burba Babbitt, president and executive director of Winter Growth. "The governor was able to get the money to us."

Mr. Schaefer helped the organization obtain a state grant to pay off Winter Growth's debt, his office said.

Winter Growth provides aid for the elderly in Howard and Montgomery counties. Most of the cost for the organization's $800,000 Columbia center was funded by corporate, group and individual donations.

At a celebration from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. today, the Winter Growth president will burn a copy of the state loan note that provided the last $340,000 needed for the building.
