Police study head-on crash that killed woman, hurt man NORTH -- Manchester * Hampstead * Lineboro

An accident reconstructionist with the state police is studying a crash that killed a 53-year-old Snydersburg woman Tuesday afternoon and sent a 35-year-old Snydersburg man to the hospital.

The woman was pronounced dead at Carroll County General Hospital after the car she was driving on Snydersburg Road near Hampstead Mexico Road collided with a pickup truck.

State police at the Westminster barracks said Ellen Marie Feustel, of the 1500 block of Amalfi Drive, was driving a 1986 Chrysler LeBaron northbound on Snydersburg Road at 4:30 p.m. when she veered to the right to avoid a 1985 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck being driven south by James Joseph O'Reilly. Mr. O'Reilly, 35, of the 2400 block of Snydersburg Road, had crossed into her lane of traffic. The vehicles crashed head-on, police said.

Both drivers were taken by ambulance to Carroll County General Hospital, where Mrs. Feustel died a short time later, police said.

Mr. O'Reilly was released from the hospital Wednesday, police said.

State police said results of the investigation would be forwarded to the state's attorney's office before a decision is made whether to file charges in the accident.

Ms. Feustel's death brought to 15 the number of people killed on the county's roads this year and to 475 the number of fatalities statewide.
