Spirit signs Vaccaro, Johnson for one year SOCCER

September 22, 1993|By Doug Brown

The Spirit yesterday announced the signings of 14-year indoor pro goalie Cris Vaccaro and rookie defender Lance Johnson, both to one-year contracts with an option year.

Vaccaro was the No. 2 goalie in the National Professional Soccer League last season with an 11.2 goals-against average. Johnson, a four-year starter at Towson State and the Spirit's No. 1 pick in the NPSL territorial draft in July, impressed Spirit coach Kenny Cooper at a minicamp 10 days ago.

"I'm excited because I feel we have something to make up for," Vaccaro said, referring to the Spirit's elimination in the first round of the playoffs by the Harrisburg Heat.

The Spirit will open training camp Oct. 4 at Du Burns Arena and play one home preseason game at the Baltimore Arena, Oct. 15 against Harrisburg, before opening the season Oct. 29 at home against the Chicago Power.
