Union church to celebrate 140 years

Lazarus United Church of Christ and Lazarus Evangelical Lutheran Church will celebrate the 140th anniversary of their founding as a Union church with a joint service at 9 a.m. Sunday.

Pastors Verna Call of Lazarus United Church of Christ and Philip G. Emanuel of Lazarus Evangelical Lutheran Church will jointly conduct this service. Former pastors of both churches along with representatives of the individual church conferences are to attend the service.

The Lazarus Bell Choir, Joint Choir and Gospel Gang will provide music.

The theme of the service will be "Thankful for Past Blessings, We Press On." Each pastors will bring a brief message and former pastors will bring greetings. Holy Communion will be served.

Nursery is available for preschool children following the conversation-with-children, which will be "Make it Your Own" by Ms. Call.

Following the service there will be a brunch at the Lineboro Fire Hall and time of fellowship. Historical artifacts from both churches also will be on display.

Tickets for the brunch are $5.50 for adults and $2.50 for children 6-12. Call Esther Renoll at 374-9187 for tickets.

The church is selling mugs depicting the original church of 1853 for $5. To order, call Wanda Waugh at 374-4084.

Also on sale Sunday will be the third edition of the Rev. Harvey Schlichter's book "Two Centuries of Grace and Growth in Manchester 1760-1960" for $8 in hardback and $4.50 in soft cover.

Hampstead responded to an oil spill on Route 30 at 2:31 p.m. Monday. Units were out for an hour.
