The Harford/Baltimore Football League began play last weekend with football action on fields in both counties. League games will culminate in A and B Conference championships on Nov. 20.

In season-opening action last Saturday morning in the 8-10 division, Fallston held on to beat Edgewood/Joppatowne, 13-12.

Dave Ganano ran for both scores in the first half, on sweeps to the right side.

Fallston missed its first field-goal attempt, but scored on its second with a one-point run by Steve Shaw.

Trailing 13-0, Edgewood/Joppatownmade adjustments and came back with two touchdowns, one in both the third and fourth quarters, but could not overcome the deficit.

Fallston running back Steve Bandzwolek had several gains and some key defensive plays for Fallston.

Other scores:

* 6-8 -- Middle River 26, Bel Air 19; Edgewood/JT 25, Parkville 25; Overlea 19, Fallston 6.

* 7-9 -- Bel Air 21, Jarrettsville 14; Edgewood/JT 12, Aberdeen 8; Parkville 25, Fallston 12.

* 8-10 -- Bel Air 22, Towson 0; Fallston 13, Edgewood/JT 12; Reisterstown 19, Jarrettsville 0.

* 9-11 -- Edgewood/JT 42, Jarrettsville 0; Fallston 21, Aberdeen 0.

* 10-12 -- Bel Air 25, Towson 6; Cockeysville 39, Jarrettsville 13; Edgewood/JT 15, Aberdeen 0; Parkville 6, Fallston 0.

11-13 -- Edgewood/JT 27, Aberdeen 0; Jarrettsville 24, Fallston 6.

Boys soccer

* Under-12 -- The Forest Hill Force handled the Hickory Thunder, 8-1, in its season-opener in the Harford Recreation Red Division.

Justin Mast scored two goals and Eric Blom, Justin Collins, Eric Gardiner, Alex Markiewicz, Steven Markiewicz and Greg Spalding each scored once.

Right wing Daniel Watts had two assists, including an excellent cross to left wing Mast, setting up a far-post header. His other assist marked a goal for fullback Gardiner, his first in fall league play.

Other assists were made by Mike Duncan, Alex Markiewicz and Collins.

In county travel league action last Sunday, the Force tied the Hickory '82 travel team, 3-3. Mast scored two goals, and Blom scored one. Brian Kretzschmar had two assists and Alex Markiewicz had one.

In other Red League action, Aberdeen and the Havre de Grace Strikers tied, 1-1, and the Hickory Lazers defeated St. Stephen's, 6-0.

* Under-14 -- Hickory Rebels won its first game of the Harford County Saturday travel league over Jarrettsville Green, 5-0.

The Rebels were led on offense by Steve Poole with a hat trick and Chris White, who scored twice.

Matt Hamme recorded the shutout in goal behind the strong defensive play of fullbacks Travis Canavan, Mike Malone, Jason

Melnyk and sweeper Brandon Schmoll.

In other under-14 Saturday League action, the Forest Hill Strikers defeated the Hickory Strikers, 8-2, and the Edgewood Patriots beat the Havre de Grace Lightning, 3-1.

* Under-10 -- The Greater Harford Soccer Club Strikers rolled to a 3-1 victory over the GSPAA Tornados.

Chris Schneider, Jeff Kocher and Mike Costello powered the Strikers with one goal apiece, with assists coming from Sean McAvoy, Brian Kemper and Cory Bolchoz.

Strong defensive efforts from Matt Wood, Robby Singer, Brandon Lijewski, Joey Meise and keeper Chris Smith aided the team in the Baltimore Beltway league season-opening victory.

Under-13 -- GHSC Scorpions played both the St. Jane Ninjas and the GSPAA Gators to 1-1 ties in recent outdoor action. Goals were scored by Tony Joynes and Aaron Sherwood, with assists credited to Chris Porter and Eric Syphard.

Syphard, Sherwood and Derrick Snyder shared time in the goal for the Scorpions.

Girls soccer

The Bel Air Blaze under-14 girls soccer team finished the 21st annual EDRECO Soccer Tournament with a 6-1 victory over the Perry Hall Soccer Club.

Madeline Thompson scored twice for the Blaze, and teammates Nicole Thrift, Alexis Stratigeas, Heidi Buchanan, and Mary Beth Rollins each scored once.

Assists were credited to Stratigeas, Shelly Ishmach, Zoe Collins and Adriene Justis.

Lynn Mann, Jenny Cook and Jennifer Westervelt worked together on defense to keep Perry Hall to just one score.
