25 Years Ago (Week of Sept. 8-14, 1968):

* The Board of Zoning Appeals heard a petition from a Long Corner couple asking for a special permit to operate a home beauty shop. The couple presented a petition in favor of the permit, signed by 35 people who lived within a two-mile radius of their home. Residents against the petition cited the possible traffic hazards attendant to a home beauty shop, as well as the risk of setting a zoning precedent for commercial encroachment in a rural area. The permit was later granted.

50 Years Ago (Week of Sept. 12-18, 1943):

* A water safety program, sponsored by the Red Cross, was held at a swimming pool in Glenwood over a two-week period. After completing their daily chores, area youngsters hiked to the pool from as far away as five miles to take their swimming lessons.
