Local theater groups will join Center Stage in block party to launch new season

More than 20 local theater companies ranging from avant-garde ensembles to dinner-theater musical troupes will help Center Stage launch its new season with a free theatrical block party from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. today.

Theater Streetfest '93 will offer backstage tours, live music, discounted tickets and theater activities for children in the Center Stage building as well as on the 700 block of North Calvert Street. The festival also gives theater fans a chance to buy theatrical props and costumes.

The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions Choral Society invites interested singers to the society's opening rehearsal-reception at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday in the East Wing Auditorium of the School of Hygiene and Public Health, 615 N. Wolfe St. No auditions are required. This year, the choral society will perform works by Haydn and Cherubini. For details, call (410) 955-3363.

* Local high school choruses and bands will perform at the 11th annual Towson Art Fest, which runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday on the grounds of the Towson Courthouse. The free event, sponsored by Historic Towson Inc. and the Greater Towson Jaycees, will include displays by professional, amateur and student artists, crafts people and photographers.

Auditions

* Arion Gesangverein, Baltimore's historic German chorale, will hold auditions for its 1993-1994 concert season at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church on Baltimore's City Hall Plaza. The season will include a performance at the national Sangerfest festival held annually in New York state. The group's repertoire includes classical and traditional folk songs performed in German. * Singers are invited to audition for the Jewish Community Center Chorale, directed by Vladimir Svoysky, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays at the Jewish Community Center, 3506 Gwynnbrook Ave., Owings Mills.

The chorale will perform a wide variety of music, from classical to pops. Rehearsals begin at the end of the month. Auditions are by appointment only. For details and an appointment, call Claudine Davison at (410) 542-4900.

* Musicians are invited to audition for the new JCC Symphony Orchestra from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays at the Jewish Community Center, 5700 Park Heights Ave. Mr. Svoysky will also direct the orchestra, which will perform classical music (both orchestra and chamber music), pops, Jewish music and concert performances of popular operas. * The Maryland Council for Dance will hold scholarship auditions at Washington College in Chestertown on Oct. 15 as part of the annual state dance festival.

Awards are based upon performance in ballet, modern dance and jazz.

Audition classes for children ages 9-13 and students ages 14-22 are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Oct. 15. All participants must be members of the Maryland Council for Dance or students of a member organization. They also must be registered to attend the festival. The deadline is Oct. 1. The Maryland Council for Dance is a non-profit corporation supported by memberships, donations and grants from the Capezio Ballet Makers Dance Foundation Inc., the Maryland State Arts Council and the Kent County Arts Council.

* Men, women and children over the age of 7 are invited to audition for the Fell's Point Corner Theatre's production of hTC Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" on Sept. 27 and 28 at the theater, 251 S. Ann St. Children will be called at 6 p.m., and adults will audition at 7 p.m. on those dates. Directed by Ann Pardoe, performances are scheduled for Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays from Dec. 2-12. * Playwrights Theatre of Baltimore Inc., a new company scheduled to mount its first production next year, is auditioning actors of all ages from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday in the Garrett Room of the Eisenhower Library of Johns Hopkins University, 34th and Charles streets.
