Caps open preseason with win

NORFOLK, Va. -- Todd Krygier scored two goals, including the eventual game-winner at 17:12 of the third period, and the Capitals defeated the Buffalo Sabres, 3-2, in Washington's preseason opener last night before 6,888 at The Scope.

Washington had a 3-on-2 when Krygier, coming down the right side, took a pass from Keith Jones and blasted it past Dominik Hasek from about 20 feet to make it 3-1.

Eleven seconds later, the Sabres' Matthew Barnaby scored, but Buffalo couldn't get the equalizer.

The Capitals outshot the Sabres, 34-19, and scored twice in the third period to win. Goalie Byron Dafoe played the whole game for the Capitals and collected 17 saves.

Washington had 16 penalties, Buffalo had eight. Washington's Brendan Witt and Enrico Ciccone each were penalized for fighting.
