A Guilford man has been indicted by a Howard County grand jury on nine charges in connection with an attempted rape Aug. 31 that police said was thwarted by three Good Samaritans who subdued the attacker until officers arrived.

Thurman Alexander Moore, 47, was indicted on charges of first-degree sexual offense, assault with intent to rape, daytime housebreaking, assault, battery, and two counts each of third-degree sexual assault and perverted sexual practices.

The indictment by grand jury Thursday transfers Moore's case from Howard District Court to the county's Circuit Court. No proceedings have been scheduled for the case yet.

Conviction on the charges would carry a maximum sentence of life in prison. Moore, of the 9400 block of Guilford Road in Howard County, is being held in the county Detention Center without bond.

According to court and state parole records, Moore has a 30-year history of sexual assaults, He was released July 14 from a 25-year sentence for a 1974 kidnapping and rape conviction.

Police said witnesses spotted Moore begging for rides from female drivers at Guilford Elementary School minutes before the attack.

Police said he was seen approaching the woman's house, where he asked to use the telephone. He then forced his way inside and threatened to kill the woman's infant, police said.

One witness, William Burley, ran to the house and, hearing screams, entering armed only with a 4-foot stick. He ordered Moore to get out of the house and lie face down, where he placed his foot on the man's back and the stick to his neck until police arrived.

Mr. Burley along with Wanda McDonald and Valerie Moore -- two other residents who helped rescue the woman -- were honored by county officials Tuesday.
