Talks set on bid to close Mansion House Crossing PASADENA

September 17, 1993

The Chesterfield Homeowners Association has asked the county Department of Public Works to close Mansion House Crossing at the intersection with Kings Bench Place.

But public works officials said they must consult with surrounding communities before the county alters the connector between Duvall Highway and Mountain Road.

"It seems to us an inordinate amount of through traffic," traveling between Mountain Road and Duvall Highway, said Bob Adams, a member of the association's board.

The speed of the traffic also has the association concerned, he said.

The association's ruling board proposed closing the intersection a meeting last month with public works and state elected officials.

Jim Schroll, chief of the county's Traffic Engineering Division, said this week that additional traffic studies must be conducted before the county can act. He said he also must meet with other communities that use Mansion House.

"They are all suffering similar problems and proposing solutions that could be contradictory," Mr. Schroll said. "We need a comprehensive plan of attack."

Not everyone supports closing Mansion House Crossing.

Carolyn Roeding, of the Pasadena Traffic Safety Committee, began pressing for road improvements several years ago after several schoolchildren were struck. But, she said, closing the road will not solve the problem. And it could cause more headaches on surrounding roads that are not as wide or straight.
