Agriculture board elects new chairman

September 15, 1993

Carroll County's Agricultural Preservation Advisory Board elected Melvin Baile Jr. chairman and gained Ruth W. Chamelin and Michael Haines as new members at the group's monthly meeting yesterday.

Mr. Baile, a board member since 1991, operates a 600-acre grain, sheep and cattle farm in New Windsor with his father, Melvin Baile Sr.

He also serves in county and state agricultural organizations, such as the Carroll County Farm Bureau, Carroll County Agricultural Center Board, Maryland Grain Producers Association and Maryland Grain Producers Utilization Board.

The new members replace Ralph L. Robertson Jr. and Russel H. Brehm, who served 10 and seven years on the board, respectively.

Ms. Chamelin, of Westminster, operates a 108-acre dairy farm on Bachman Valley Road with her husband. The farm, which has 75 milking cows, is in the preservation program and an easement has been sold.

She is a graduate of Delaware Valley College.

Mr. Haines is past president of the county Dairy Herd Improvement Association, the county Holstein Association and a past director of the state Holstein Association. He purchased an 85-acre farm from his parents in 1988 and sold an easement to the Maryland Agricultural Land Preservation Foundation in 1989.

He and his wife have a 62-cow herd and rent additional land for a total of 450 acres.

Mr. Robertson and Mr. Brehm received certificates of appreciation from the county commissioners yesterday for their board service.
