COLLEGE PARK — Penalty kick lifts No. 1 Cavs over Terps, 1-0

COLLEGE PARK -- Brian Bates scored on a first-half penalty kick as No. 1 Virginia defeated Maryland, 1-0, in an Atlantic Coast Conference men's soccer game yesterday.

Virginia (4-0, 1-0) was awarded the penalty kick with 4:57 remaining in the first half. Bates went left with the shot, which hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced in.

The Terps (1-3, 0-1) outshot the Cavaliers 5-4 in the second half, but one shot went wide and Virginia goalkeeper Jeff Causey made four saves. Maryland's Ken Weinstein had three saves.

Loyola 1, San Francisco 0

SAN FRANCISCO

SAN FRANCISCO -- Will Cirrincione scored off a crossing pass from Bill Wnek 4:09 into the second half to lift Loyola in the second round of the USF Met Life Classic.

Zac Thornton recorded nine saves for Loyola (3-1).

Mt. St. Mary's 3, Shepherd 2

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Sophomore Mike Faubert scored on a direct kick with 3:30 remaining to lift Mount St. Mary's (4-0).

The Mount led 2-0 at halftime on goals by Faubert and freshman Dan Gaertner (Glenelg).

Towson 3, Coastal Carolina 2

Sophomore Todd Hicks stole a pass and scored the game-winning goal with 23 seconds remaining in the second overtime to lift Towson State (1-2, 1-0) past Coastal Carolina (2-1, 0-1) in the Big South Conference on Saturday night.

The Tigers, who had scored just one goal in losing their first two games of the season last weekend, took a 1-0 lead just 4:05 into the game on a goal by junior Chas Zimmerman (Dulaney) and a 2-1 lead on a goal by junior Pat Coyle at 29:33.

Senior goalkeeper Rich Pellegrini (John Carroll) had a career-high 16 saves for the Tigers, who were outshot 20-14.
