Ex-Uniontown man to edit Calif. paper

September 12, 1993

Mike Townsend, a former Uniontown resident and one-time editor of the Harford Sun, has been named editor of the Marin Independent Journal.

"Every step of my career has been grounded in local news," said Mr. Townsend, 41, in an article published in the Journal Friday. "That's where my interest and skills reside. That's where the readers of this newspaper can expect the staff and me to place emphasis."

Mr. Townsend replaced Jay Silverberg, who resigned from the newspaper in August.

He most recently was managing editor of the Rockford (Ill.) Register Star. Before working for the Register Star, Mr. Townsend was an editor for The Harford County Sun, a former zoned tabloid section of The Sun. Prior to that he was editor of the Carroll County Times.

The Marin Independent Journal has a daily circulation of about 43,000 and a Sunday circulation of about 44,000.
