PAT ESKINAZI of Severna Park has been a volunteer tutor with the Anne Arundel Literacy Council for six years, including a two-year stint as president. Recently, she has been updating instructional and policy manuals for use by incoming volunteers.

Organization's comments: "Pat has spent countless hours overseeing council activities such as tutoring, student support, fund-raising and monthly meetings," said Judy Mooney, another volunteer with the council.

Volunteer's comments: "As president, I was in charge of scheduling meetings, the day-to-day running of things, and staffed the office one night a week," Ms. Eskinazi said.

"Since stepping down as president last May, I've been working with evaluating new students and putting together a training manual. My husband, a computer analyst, has been helping me with that. He's given the council a lot of free time, since he's familiar with computers.

About the volunteer: Ms. Eskinazi moved to Anne Arundel County from Gaithersburg in 1985. A former teacher, Ms Eskinazi works part time for Northwest Airlines.

About the organization: The Anne Arundel Literacy Council provides free reading and writing lessons to functionally illiterate adults. This month, the council is celebrating its 16th year of service to county residents.

The council has a speakers bureau available to address community organizations, clubs and churches.
