National League -- Announced that Chicago Cubs P Jose Bautista withdrew his appeal of a three-game suspension and began serving it immediately.

Atlanta Braves -- Recalled P Pedro Borbon, 1B/OF Ryan Klesko, 1B/OF Brian Hunter and IF Chipper Jones from Triple-A Richmond. Designated IF Hector Roa for assignment.

Orioles -- Recalled P Brad Pennington and IF/OF Paul Carey from Triple-A Rochester.

Chicago Cubs -- Purchased the contract of P Bill Brennan from Triple-A Iowa.

Cincinnati Reds -- Placed OF Kevin Mitchell on the 60-day DL. Received P Hector Carrasco from the Florida Marlins to complete the March 27 trade for P Chris Hammond.

Minnesota Twins -- Recalled SS Denny Hocking from Double-A Nashville. Purchased the contracts of OF Rich Becker and IF Scott Stahoviak from Nashville.

New York Mets -- Placed OF Darren Reed on waivers for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release.

New York Yankees -- Activated P Steve Farr from the 15-day DL.

Texas Rangers -- Activated P Charlie Leibrandt from the DL. Recalled P Hector Fajardo from Single-A Charlotte. Assigned IF Cris Colon outright to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

NCAA -- Suspended Texas A&M LB Jessie Cox for one year, RB Greg Hill for five games, WR Brian Mitchell for four games, WR William Mitchell for three games, and OL James Brooks for two games, all for accepting money for summer work they did not perform and all retroactive to last Saturday's game against Louisiana State.

Houston -- Announced that associate athletic director and tennis coach Cathy Beene will leave the school to become associate athletic director and senior women's administrator at the University of Texas-Arlington.

Mississippi -- Announced LB Cassius Ware has been reinstated by the NCAA.

St. John's (Minn.) -- Announced that athletic director John Gagliardi has resigned but will continue as head football coach.

Trenton State -- Named Dawn Henderson women's basketball coach.

Houston Oilers -- Added RB LeShai Maston to the active roster.

Indianapolis Colts -- Announced free-agent WR Eddie Brown would not be offered a contract.

New Orleans Saints -- Announced S Brett Maxie is out for the season with a knee injury.

Washington Redskins -- Added DL Sterling Palmer to the inactive list.

Toronto Argonauts (CFL) -- Fired GM Mike McCarthy, head coach Dennis Meyer and OC Mouse Davis. Named Bob O'Billovich GM/head coach.

Edmonton Oilers -- Acquired D Link Gaetz from the San Jose Sharks for a conditional 10th-round draft pick.

Montreal Canadiens -- Signed RW Valeri Bure to a two-year contract.

NHL -- Named John M. Huston vice president and chief financial officer, effective Sept. 13.

San Jose Sharks -- Announced the retirement of D Doug Wilson.

Olympics

USA Baseball -- Named Rich Alday head coach, and Chuck Anderson, Ed Cheff and Bob Todd assistant coaches for 1994.
