Each accused of threats to shoot other

Two Edgewater men have been charged with assault after each allegedly threatened to shoot the other during a neighborhood dispute, county police said yesterday.

Officers said they arrived at the homes in the 1700 block of Chesapeake Drive about 8:30 p.m. Monday and saw one man standing next to a house holding two rifles.

Authorities said the man, identified as Charles Herbert Wilkinson, dropped the weapons and told police that a neighbor had broken some bottles in front of his house and that he wanted the neighbor to clean up the mess.

But the neighbor, identified as John Mahoney, allegedly threatened Mr. Wilkinson with a rifle and Mr. Wilkinson went home to get his own weapons to show "that he wasn't the only one who has guns," police said.

Mr. Mahoney denied to police that he ever had a weapon, but two witnesses disputed that claim, according to the police report.

The men, who live two houses apart in the 1700 block of Chesapeake Drive, were charged with assault. Their ages were not available.

Target of vulgarity chokes teen at red light

A man apparently upset at being the target of an obscene gesture from a passenger in an adjacent car Monday morning choked the man while both cars were stopped at a red light south of Annapolis.

A 19-year-old resident of Severna Park told police that he made the obscene gesture while eastbound on Central Avenue about 11 a.m.

While stopped at a signal on Central Avenue and Solomons Island Road, the teen-ager said, the man jumped out of his car and choked him, saying, "If you ever give me the finger again, I'll kill you," the police report says.

Police have not been able to find the man, who was driving a car registered in Wilmington, Del.
