I-97 to detour at Exit 5 for 8 hours

Because of recent inclement weather, the construction schedule on southbound I-97 has been changed, the State Highway Administration has announced.

Weather permitting, construction will cause the road to be closed at Exit 5, Maryland 178 (Generals Highway), from 10 p.m. today to 6 a.m. tomorrow.

Variable message signs have been posted alerting motorists of the closure. Traffic will be detoured onto southbound 178 to reach U.S. 50.

The closure is necessary so concrete can be poured for the new northbound I-97 interchange from eastbound U.S. 50. State police will assist SHA with the traffic management. Motorists are advised to stay alert during the overnight closure.

If weather is poor during the scheduled construction, the work will be re-scheduled to next week.

Thirty-five people were selected to participate in this year's program.

The program is sponsored by the Anne Arundel Trade Council and the Annapolis Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with

the Anne Arundel County Government.
