Terps' Abrams ruled ineligible

September 08, 1993|By Paul McMullen

Maryland announced yesterday that Richard Abrams, a defensive lineman from Arundel High, failed to meet the NCAA's requirements for freshman eligibility and won't play football for the Terps this year. Abrams had the required Scholastic Assessment Test score and cumulative grade-point average in high school, but he didn't have the 11 core courses required by the NCAA.

If eligible, Abrams (6 feet 4, 265 pounds) would probably have played as a true freshman on a defensive line that lost its top player, Mark Sturdivant, to a broken ankle in last Saturday's loss to Virginia.
