Airport expansion work to begin next week

September 08, 1993

Expansion work at the Carroll County Regional Airport will begin next week, General Services Director J. Michael Evans said yesterday.

Officials will have a ground-breaking ceremony at 9 a.m. Sept. 16. About 50 people, including Gov. William Donald Schaefer, will be invited.

The county received an $800,000 federal grant last week for the relocation of Meadow Branch Road and grading work on the new runway.

The county is moving the road to build a new 5,100-foot runway. The existing 3,200-foot runway will be extended and used as a taxiway.

The contractor, Dewey Jordan of Frederick, expects to finish the road work before Christmas, Mr. Evans said.

The $17 million project will be completed in several phases. The Federal Aviation Administration is paying 90 percent of the cost, and the state and county are paying 5 percent each.
