Cheerleaders to compete nationally

Centennial High School cheerleaders participated in the National Cheerleading Association camp, Aug. 7-10 at Western Maryland College.

The varsity squad received a bid to the NCA National Competition in Dallas Dec. 28 and 29.

The squad also was a finalist in the Top Squad Competitions. Junior varsity cheerleader Lindsay VonParis was named to the NCA All-American Team. She is eligible to perform in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade, the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Dublin, Ireland, and the Aloha Bowl half-time show in Hawaii.

New recreation center to celebrate opening

On Saturday, enjoy entertainment, demonstrations, face painting, refreshments, tours and a variety of activities showcasing programs and staff at the new Rockburn Elementary School Recreation Center.

All ages are welcome at this free event sponsored by the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Featured programs are youth basketball and soccer, crafts, creative movement, tap dancing and aerobics. Information: 313-4920.

5900 block of Rowanberry Drive: Someone attempted to steal a Ford Mustang early Thursday morning.

6200 block of Ducketts Lane: A rear window of a residence was pried open Thursday and cash and jewelry were taken.

6200 block of Ducketts Lane: A thief broke a basement window and ransacked a residence Thursday before carrying off an undetermined amount of property.

7100 block of Brookdale Drive: A white 1993 Mitsubishi Diamante was stolen Thursday.

* Ellicott City: 9400 block of Route 40: A black 1984 Ford Thunderbird with Maryland tags ZGP959 was stolen from a Midas auto repair lot Thursday.
