Gunman who took hostage is killed by police marksman

September 06, 1993

An unidentified gunman, who took a woman hostage after the fatal shooting of another woman, was killed by a police sharpshooter yesterday as he sat next to the hostage in a parked car in a Langley Park cul-de-sac.

Montgomery County police said their pursuit of the man began after authorities discovered that an unidentified 28-year-old woman had been shot to death in her Silver Spring apartment, and a man, Mark Killian, of Woodbridge, Va., had been cut with a knife on his throat and neck in a dispute with the suspect.

Before fleeing the Silver Spring complex, the suspect took another woman hostage and forced her into a yellow van.

Police spotted the van on Route 198 in Burtonsville. During the ensuing chase, the suspect wrecked the van near Beltsville and fired shots at pursuing Montgomery and Prince George's officers.

He then commandeered a car and led police to a cul-de-sac in Langley Park, where he held authorities at bay for nearly an hour before being killed by a police sharpshooter.

The hostage suffered a cut on her neck and was taken to the Washington Hospital Center for treatment, police said.
