Players to watch 1993 Harford County boys soccer preview

September 05, 1993

David Blades, C. M. Wright, Sr., D -- A back injury has limited his preseason work, but he is expected to be the defensive leader. He was a second-team All-County choice last year.

Joel Duchon, Havre de Grace, Sr., D -- The sweeper back, second-team All-County last year, is one of four three-year starters expected to help the team improve on last year's 8-6 record.

Jason Edwards, Harford Christian, Soph., M -- A versatile player who will be called upon to be one of the workhorses for a team that is short on numbers.

John Helmer, Bel Air, Sr., D -- He is one of three holdover starters -- the only senior and the only defender.

Mike Hollenbeck, Edgewood, Sr., M -- A three-year team member, he is the most experienced player for a group trying to jump-start the program.

Steve James, Aberdeen, Sr., G -- The only returning starter from last year's county runner-up. He will be particularly tested until a young defense matures in front of him.

Mark O'Connor, John Carroll, Sr., D -- He has had a number of nagging injuries, but once he recovers will anchor the defense for last year's MSA regular-season runner-up.

Steve Schissler, Fallston, Sr. D -- He is a two-year regular counted on to shore up a defense that lost two All-County members to graduation.

Fred Sheckells, Fallston, Sr. M -- A three-year regular, he has the most experience of four senior veterans, and led the team in assists last year with 11. He is projected as the link between a solid defense and a young offense.

Keith Smith, North Harford, Jr., M -- A second-team All-County selection last year, he was the only sophomore on the two honor teams.

Frank Sweeney, John Carroll, Sr. M -- A three-year starter and the only junior on last year's All-County first team. He had seven goals and eight assists while providing strong leadership for that 11-3-2 entry. Hughes will count on his goal-scoring ability, citing his excellent skills and rating him as one of the top players in the county and in the MSA.

Robert Wilson, Joppatowne, Sr., M -- One of three three-year veterans being counted upon for leadership, he should provide stability in the middle.
