Wind foils Fleet 1 in Race Week opener

SAILING

September 05, 1993|By Nancy Noyes | Nancy Noyes,Contributing Writer

Despite brief rain squalls, one of the area's premier sailing events began yesterday when the crews of nearly 200 boats enjoyed the opener of the three-day 27th annual Annapolis Race Week regatta.

Breezes were westerly, ranging from 8 to 12 knots generally, and Fleet 3 was able to complete two races before the wind died late in the afternoon.

Fleet 1, managed for the day by the Annapolis Yacht Club, completed only a single 10.2-mile windward-leeward contest on the central course near the mouth of the Severn River. A second race for that group was canceled in dead air a little after 4 p.m.

On the northern course, near Sandy Point Light above the Bay Bridge, the Magothy River Sailing Association produced two 6-mile contests for Fleet 3, while on the southern end of the three courses, near Thomas Point, the Naval Academy Sailing Squadron's race committee brought off two races of similar length.
