Drag-racing driver critically injured during competition

September 05, 1993

A drag-racing driver was in critical condition yesterday after an accident during competition at Capitol Raceway near Crofton Friday night in which his car was traveling about 160 mph, authorities said.

Robert Brooks, 34, of the 11000 block of Woodlawn Blvd. in Largo, was flown to Prince George's Hospital Center in Cheverly after the accident at 9:15 p.m.

Anne Arundel County police said Mr. Brooks was racing a 1988 Camaro on the track when his throttle apparently stuck. Authorities said his car's main parachute and safety parachute failed to open, and the car, traveling about 160 mph, struck a dirt barrier.
