Workshops planned for literacy tutors Volunteers can attend orientation

September 05, 1993

The Literacy Council of Carroll County Inc. will have a prospective tutor orientation from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday and tutor training workshops from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 18 and Oct. 2 at the council office in Westminster.

The purpose of the workshop is to train adults to tutor other adults and older youths, who would normally be out of school, in such areas as phonics, reading, writing and spelling.

No previous experience is necessary, but sensitivity, patience and time to devote to helping others is essential.

Attendance at the orientation and both workshops is a requisite for certification. Preregistration is required.

The Literacy Council of Carroll County is affiliated with Laubach Literacy Action, the largest volunteer-based literacy organization in the United States.

The council is a member of Literacy Providers of Carroll County and the Maryland State Literacy Coalition, and participates in Literacy Works, the governor's initiative on literacy.
