Bud Moore Engineering -- Added Lake Speed as a 1994 driver. Geoff Bodine, Moore's current driver, has bought Alan Kulwicki Racing from the estate of the 1992 NASCAR Winston Cup champion who was killed April 1 in the crash of a private plane.

Robert Yates Racing -- Announced that Ernie Irvan will take over the ride left vacant by the death of Davey Allison. Irvan completed the buyout of the final year of his five-year contract with Morgan-McClure Racing yesterday.

Baseball

NL -- Suspended Houston Astros P Todd Jones for five games and fined him an undisclosed amount for brushing back Montreal Expos P Dennis Martinez twice in the same at-bat during a game Aug. 27. Reduced the seven-game suspension of Pittsburgh Pirates P Blas Minor to five games for throwing at Chicago Cubs 1B Mark Grace in a game Aug. 2.

Orioles -- Recalled C Jeff Tackett from Triple-A Rochester.

California Angels -- Placed P Gene Nelson on waivers for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release. Purchased the contract of P Paul Swingle from Triple-A Vancouver.

Chicago White Sox -- Recalled OF Mike Huff from Triple-A Nashville. Recalled P Jeff Schwarz from a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Nashville and reinstated him from the 15-day DL.

Cincinnati Reds -- Recalled P Chris Bushing from Double-A Chattanooga.

Detroit Tigers -- Recalled P Greg Gohr and P Buddy Groom from Triple-A Toledo and OF Danny Bautista from Double-A London.

Houston Astros -- Recalled OF Rick Parker from Triple-A Tucson.

Oakland Athletics -- Activated 1B Mark McGwire from the DL. Recalled 1B Marcos Armas from Triple-A Tacoma. Recalled C Erik Helfand from Double-A Huntsville.

Pittsburgh Pirates -- Named John Sirignano director of Major League Baseball Administration. Named following as special assistants to the GM: Lenny Yochim, Ken Parker, Leland Maddox and Pete Vuckovich.

St. Louis Cardinals -- Activated IF Geronimo Pena and P Les Lancaster from the DL.

San Francisco Giants -- Recalled P Gino Minutelli, 1B J. R. Phillips and OF Steve Hosey from Triple-A Phoenix.

Seattle Mariners -- Recalled P Roger Salkeld from Double-A Jacksonville.

Basketball

Charlotte Hornets -- Acquired G Hersey Hawkins from the Philadelphia 76ers for G Dana Barros, F Sidney Green, the rights to G Greg Graham and the option to switch 1994 first-round picks with the Seattle SuperSonics.

Phoenix Suns -- Signed F Joe Courtney to a one-year contract.

Sacramento Kings -- Signed G Randy Brown.

Arizona State -- Named Trent Dimas women's assistant gymnastics coach.

Miami, Fla. -- Announced that baseball coach Brad Kelley, accused of buying drinks for a player in violation of team policy, resigned. He was replaced by assistant Henry "Turtle" Thomas.

Miami, Ohio -- Announced that freshman basketball player Chad Allen will not be eligible the 1993-94 season after failing to meet NCAA academic requirements.

Michigan -- President James J. Duderstadt concluded his nationwide search for an AD by recommending M. Joseph Roberson, who has been executive director of the Campaign for Michigan.

North Carolina State -- Named Brian Lane men's assistant basketball coach.

Tarleton -- Named Lonn Reisman AD.

Football

Detroit Lions -- Activated T Lomas Brown from a roster exemption and signed TE Ty Hallock from the practice squad. Terminated the contracts of C Leonard Burton and LB Toby Caston.

Houston Oilers -- Agreed to a three-year contract extension with DT Ray Childress.

Los Angeles Rams -- Signed RB Howard Griffith. Released RB Ken Clark. Said that offensive players had elected T Jackie Slater as captain and that defensive players picked S Anthony Newman. Special-teams captain will be selected on a weekly basis.

New York Giants -- Agreed to a three-year deal with RB Rodney Hampton worth an estimated $6.9 million. The contract, which expires after the 1995 season, will pay him an average of $2.3 million annually. The deal is front-loaded, paying Hampton close to $3 million this year.

Pittsburgh Steelers -- Signed DB Fred Foggie to their practice squad.
