Players to watch 1993 Harford County high school football preview

September 03, 1993|By John W. Stewart

Mike Cromwell, Aberdeen, Sr., RB-DB, 5-10, 170 -- Had six TDs last year, including three on runs and one on a reception. Caught 14 passes for 171 yards. Led the county in interceptions with six, returning two for TDs.

Mike Gibson, Havre de Grace, Sr., WB-LB, 6-0, 180 -- Rushed for 466 yards and four TDs, and caught 10 passes for 195 yards and one TD. Had four interceptions.

Chris Harrison, Fallston, Sr., OT-DT, 6-3, 225 -- Bigger and stronger than a year ago, when his coach, Dave Cesky, said: "He was underrated, but was one of the best." Won't be overlooked this year.

Cable Miller, Joppatowne, Sr., OL-LB, 6-0, 205 -- The team leader is a solid blocker on offense (helped make way for a 1,000-yard rusher a year ago) and a fierce tackler at linebacker. His leadership will be especially important on a team that figures to struggle.

Ron Mincy, John Carroll, Sr., FB-LB, 6-1, 195 -- Defensively was second on the team in tackles as a sophomore, and first last year when he had 100. Offensively was the

team's top rusher, but numbers should be better with an improved offense.

Tim Mullin, North Harford, Sr., QB-K, 6-0, 150 -- Played five games at quarterback last year, completing 50 percent of his passes. Was the All-County punter with a county-high 44 punts for a 33.6-yard average.

Victor Smith, Bel Air, Sr., QB-DB, 6-1, 160 -- Challenged for starting quarterback role, but most likely will start at end, where he was All-County as a junior. He led the county in receptions with 20 (for 63 yards). Returned four interceptions for 50 yards.

Mike Sprouse, C. M. Wright, Sr., OT-DT, 6-5, 265 -- A dominating All-County lineman, he helped the Mustangs average a county-leading 250 rushing yards and limit the opposition to an average of 157 yards (second in county).

Jason Tharpe, C. M. Wright, Sr., RB-LB, 5-11, 185 -- An All-County back, he led the county in scoring with 15 TDs and an extra point, was third in rushing with 1,049 yards, and fourth in tackles with 145.

Brad Thomas, Fallston, Sr., QB-DB, 5-10, 160 -- The All-County quarterback ran for five TDs, passed for 468 yards and four TDs

and had the best punting average (38.4 yards).

Adric Turner, Aberdeen, Sr. RB-DB, 5-11 190 -- He was his team's top offensive threat a year ago when he ran for 500 yards and nine TDs.

Keenan Turner, Edgewood, Sr., RB-DB, 5-7, 165 -- One-half of a 1-2 rushing attack that averaged 163 yards and led the team in tackles with 63.

Artie White, Havre de Grace, Jr., RB-DB -- Was slowed by a foot injury in the preseason, but expectations for him are high. Last year, his offense was limited behind 1,000-yard rusher Marvin Jackson, but he had a team-high 128 tackles and three interceptions.

Kenton Worthington, Edgewood, Sr., RB-LB, 6-1, 175 -- The other half of the Rams' 1-2 punch, he ran for 523 yards and three TDs.
