Erasing the memory of an injury-riddled 3-7 season is never easy.

But first-year Oakland Mills coach Ken Hovet appears to hav enough talented players to reverse that record this season.

The Scorpions lost their two captains to injuries in the first gam last year -- one to a broken leg, one to a broken arm. Not much else went right early as the Scorpions lost their first five games.

If it can avoid those types of serious injuries, Oakland Mills wil be tough this season because it is loaded with good-sized athletes in the skill positions.

Hovet emphasizes that those athletes lack experience, however.

Senior running back Damien Smith (5-foot-11, 190 pounds) is on who has some experience. He rushed for 900 yards last season.

Senior quarterback Chad Fekel (5-11, 175) has a good arm.

Junior running back Jake Daft (6-1, 190) looks impressive so far.

He had a 65-yard run in a scrimmage against Fairmont Heights.

Junior wide receiver Sam Smith (6-2, 170) hopes to make th Scorpions' passing game effective.

"We'll probably be running 75 percent of the time," Hovet said.

Junior Lang Wethington (6-1, 185) will play tight end an linebacker.

The Scorpions return two senior defensive backs -- John Daf (Jake's brother) and Ricky Leon.

That gives Oakland Mills seven starting players from last year' team.

One of the most promising newcomers is sophomore Brian Howard (5-11, 205), a running back and linebacker.

"We expect big things from him," said Hovet. "He's only 14 year old and will start at linebacker."

Two seniors will add some beef to the offensive line. Bra Matelvic (6-1, 250) will play tackle and Josh Coleman (6-2, 260) will play center.

The offensive line will have three players up from junior varsity - juniors James Johnson (5-11, 175) and Eamon Gallagher (5-10, 185) and sophomore Matt Rollman (6-1, 180).

Sophomore Ron Gamble (6-1, 195) will play defensive line olinebacker.

Brandy Walker will punt, and Walker or Jake Daft will be the kicker.

Three of Oakland Mills' county losses last season were by ontouchdown, so the Scorpions were not far from a winning record.

"We'll be improved over last year," Hovet said. "It will just depend on how quickly we develop."
