At 15, I would dream of being

In an unfamiliar classroom,

Facing an unexpected final

In an unknown subject.

At 25, of standing

In a cavernous lecture hall,

Addressing my esteemed

Naked, except for my socks.

At 30, of having

My Ph.D. wrested from me

For lack of one college credit

In volleyball.

Perhaps, by 40,

Struggling, wakeful feelings of

Competence, genuineness,

Will begin to put such dreams

To merciful rest.
