National League -- President Bill White shortened Pittsburgh Pirates manager Jim Leyland's fight-related suspension by one game. Leyland, initially suspended for six games for throwing a punch at Los Angeles Dodgers P Kevin Gross last Tuesday, now must sit out only five games. He can return to the bench for the Pirates-Dodgers game tomorrow in Pittsburgh.

Minnesota Twins -- Recalled P Brett Merriman from Triple-A Portland.

Seattle Mariners -- Signed SS Alex Rodriguez, the first player chosen in the June free-agent draft.

Texas Rangers -- Announced that DH Steve Balboni, P Rick Reed, P Mike Schooler, P Jeff Bronkey, P Darren Oliver (son of former major-leaguer Bob Oliver) and OF Doug Dascenzo will be called up tomorrow.

Toronto Blue Jays -- Sent P Woody Williams and P Ricky Steed to Single-A Dunedin.

Basketball

Dallas Mavericks -- Signed G Lucious Harris, their second-round pick, to a two-year contract with a club option fora third year.

Golden State Warriors -- Signed free-agent G Jay Goodman to a one-year contract.

Houston Rockets -- Fired general manager Steve Patterson. Named Tod Leiweke to replace him under the official title of team president.

Los Angeles Lakers -- Signed free-agent F Trevor Wilson.

Milwaukee Bucks -- Signed free-agent C Greg Ritter to a one-year contract.

College

Alabama State -- Named Curtis Stapleton offensive coordinator and Roger Totten quarterbacks and receivers coach.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff -- Will forfeit last weekend's 32-22 victory over Harding University because 10 players were ineligible.

Dartmouth -- Named Chris Wielgus women's basketball coach.

Florida -- Announced that redshirt sophomore LB Carlton Pouncy has quit the team.

Lafayette -- Named Bob Heffner offensive line coach, Derryk Sellers assistant football coach and Robert Williams men's assistant basketball coach.

Lock Haven -- Named John Thompson assistant football coach.

BMiami -- Formally notified the NCAA of allegations that six former football players received thousands of dollars from a sports agent while they were with the Hurricanes in 1987.

L Robert Morris -- Named Dan Radakovich defensive coordinator.

Salisbury State -- Named Deanna Parks women's volleyball and softball coach.

Vermont -- Named Matt Johnson men's assistant basketball coach.

Golf

Ryder Cup -- European captain Bernard Gallacher added Spain's Seve Ballesteros and Jose-Maria Olazabal and Sweden's Joakim Haeggman to the team.
