Burglar fails to open safe in break-in

A burglar, who may have obtained a key to a Hampstead jewelry store, failed in an attempt to batter open a safe Friday.

State Police believe the burglar entered the Hampstead Gold and Diamond Center in the North Carroll Shopping Center, in 2300 block of Hanover Pike, about 1:30 a.m.

Police responded to an alarm then, but found all the doors locked and no signs of forced entry at the shop.

The break-in was discovered when the manager opened the business in the early afternoon. Police returned to find the dials of the safe destroyed. They also found that several pieces of jewelry were missing from the store.

The missing jewelry, mostly watches and gold chains, is valued between $1,000 and $1,500, said an official at the store.

An investigation into the break-in is continuing and officials of the jewelry shop are conducting an inventory to determine what is missing.
