James, Kubiak star in Navy scrimmage

August 29, 1993|By Special to The Sun

A 71-yard touchdown run by senior tailback Billy James highlighted Navy's first full-scale scrimmage of 1993 yesterday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis.

Junior quarterback Jim Kubiak, coming off shoulder surgery that sidelined him for all of 1992 except for three quarters of the opening game, completed 22 of 31 passes for 242 yards and one touchdown.

James, who was slowed by injuries a year ago, led all rushers with 113 yards on 15 carries and he had a pair of receptions for 19 yards.

"I was pleased with what I saw out there today," said fourth-year coach George Chaump.

"I was satisfied with all three quarterbacks and satisfied with what our offense did. And the defense made some big plays, too."
