Name: Patricia "Trish" A. Slater, 18, of Ellicott City.

Hobbies and other activities: Ms. Slater is a graduate of Glenelg High School. She volunteers at Grassroots, a nonprofit organization that operates a 24-hour crisis intervention telephone line with an emergency shelter and transitional housing program for homeless people.

Organization's Comments: "Trish has done an outstanding job working with children here at Grassroots," Pat Daughtry, children's counselor at Grassroots, said.

"She has come in faithfully one night each week since she began in January 1993. She has done much more than the three month commitment we ask from our volunteers," said Ms. Daughtry.

"We have found her to be very responsible and the kids enjoy playing with her."

Volunteer's Comments: "I volunteer because I like to give back to the community and because I love working with children," Ms. Slater said.

"One of the reasons I got started volunteering, was through my high school, they had an internship type thing at the Baltimore National Aquarium. Three of us were chosen, and I was the only one to go through the program.

"When I worked at the aquarium, I had specific things to do, and I worked with children, so I decided to work with kids" at Grassroots.

She is involved with Project MEET, which works with parents, mostly mothers, through Howard County Community College. The program helps participants to find their educational goals and learn self-sufficiency. It also prepares them to be employable through taking resume-writing classes and learning job skills.

Ms. Slater helps to watch the participants' children so they don't have to worry about them. Before working in Project MEET, she was a "special friend," someone who plays with children, so their parents can meet with counselors or take a brief break from their children, Ms. Daughtry said.

Ms. Slater said she will volunteer this fall at Harmony Hall Retirement Community.

About Ms. Slater: Her parents are William and Joyce Slater. She has a sister, Beth.

Ms. Slater played field hockey, lacrosse, and ran indoor track in ,, high school. This month, she played field hockey in the Maryland State Games. She was class president in her junior and senior years and was vice president in her freshman and sophomore years. She was features page editor and photographer at the Shield, a student newspaper at her high school. She also was a peer mediator. She received the Michael Dixon Memorial Scholarship in high school. The scholarship is based on leadership, academics and activities in and out of school.

She is a hostess at the Crab Shanty in Ellicott City.

Ms. Slater will attend Catonsville Community College in the fall.
