American League -- Suspended Oakland Athletics P Edwin Nunez for 10 games, manager Tony La Russa and coach Tommy Reynolds for five games, DH Troy Neel for four games and 1B Mark McGwire for three games for their part in a brawl Tuesday. Suspended Milwaukee Brewers manager Phil Garner for five games and P Graeme Lloyd for three games for their parts in the altercation.

National League -- Suspended New York Mets P Dwight Gooden for five games for hitting the Cincinnati Reds' Brian Koelling in a game Aug. 20; Pittsburgh Pirates P Bob Walk for five games for hiting the Los Angeles Dodgers' Kevin Gross in a game Aug. 21; and Pirates manager Jim Leyland for six games for charging the mound in a game Aug. 21. They were fined an undisclosed amount.

Orioles -- Sent 1B Glenn Davis to Single-A Frederick on rehabilitation assignment.

California Angels -- Recalled C Chris Turner from Triple-A Vancouver. Designated 1B Ty Van Burkleo for assignment. Transferred C John Orton's medical rehabilitation assignment from Single-A Palm Springs to Triple-A Vancouver.

Chicago White Sox -- Announced that DH George Bell is beginning his injury rehabilitation with Single-A South Bend.

Houston Astros -- Claimed P Rick Huisman on waivers from the San Francisco Giants. Optioned Huisman to Triple-A Tucson.

Kansas City Royals -- Activated P Mark Gardner from the DL and optioned him to Triple-A Omaha.

Pittsburgh Pirates -- Activated OF Andy Van Slyke from the 15-day DL. Recalled P John Hope from Triple-A Buffalo. Placed P Randy Tomlin on the 15-day DL. Sent P Brian Shouse outright to Buffalo.

Los Angeles Lakers -- Signed F George Lynch, their first-round draft choice.

Philadelphia 76ers -- Signed free-agent C Eric Leckner. Renounced the rights to C Andrew Lang.

Auburn -- Named George "Tic" Price men's assistant basketball coach.

Eastern Oregon -- Announced the resignation of men's basketball coach Howard Gauthier so can take the position at Wartburg College.

Notre Dame -- Announced that freshman FB Ron Hardin left the team and will transfer.

Syracuse -- Named that LB Dan Conley will sit out the season to have reconstructive surgery on his right knee.

Tarleton State -- Announced the resignation of AD Ron Newsome.

Cincinnati Bengals -- Waived DL Tony Savage. Signed holdout WR Reggie Rembert. Claimed DL George Hinkle off waivers from the Minnesota Vikings.

Detroit Lions -- Activated CB Ryan McNeil. Waived QB Chuck Long.

Phoenix Cardinals -- Agreed to terms with RB Garrison Hearst, the team's first-round draft choice.

San Diego Chargers -- Signed RB Ronnie Harmon to a three-year contract.

USGA -- Announced that the 1996 U.S. Open will be at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

Chicago Blackhawks -- Signed RW Dino Grossi, their 12th-round pick in 1990, to a two-year contract and D Bob Kellogg, their third-round pick in 1989, to a three-year contract.

Dallas Stars -- Signed C Dave Barr and C Chris Tancill to multi-year contracts and G Troy Gamble to a one-year contract.

Los Angeles Kings -- Matched a five-year, $9-million contract offer tendered to D Marty McSorley by the St. Louis Blues. Traded McSorley to the Pittsburgh Penguins for C Shawn McEachern.

San Jose Sharks -- Named Steve Myrland assistant coach for strength and conditioning and Sergei Tchekmarev assistant trainer.
