Around the house

* Avoid the frustration of finding the edge of a roll of plastic wrap. Wind a circle of adhesive tape, sticky-side out, around your finger; tap around roll until the wrap catches onto the tape. Unroll.

* Use only dry pot holders when cooking; a moist one transmits heat.

* Remove scuff marks from leather shoes. Dip a soft cloth in silver polish and rub away stain.

* Clean pleated lamp shades easily. Take shade outdoors, spray a clean paintbrush with a dust remover and brush off dust that has accumulated between crevices of shade.

* Remove soil from golf balls. Soak in 1 cup water and 1/4 cup ammonia.

* Clean ivory piano keys with a mixture of non-gel toothpaste and baking soda mixed in equal parts. Plastic keys may be wiped clean with an all-purpose cleaner. Wear gloves or old socks on hands to apply cleaner and to wipe keys dry.

* Remove soil from playing cards. Rub a fabric-softener sheet or a baby wipe across surface and wipe dry with a clean dust cloth. Bent cards may be zapped straight in the microwave.

In the garden

* Trim ivy and other ground covers that are beginning to encroach on walkways.
