Chicago White Sox -- Announced that DH George Bell is beginning his injury rehabilitation with Single-A South Bend.

Cincinnati Reds -- Claimed OF Phil Dauphin on waivers from the Chicago Cubs. Assigned him to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Cleveland Indians -- Fired pitching coach Rick Adair. Named former Orioles minor-league pitching coach Dom Chiti pitching coach for the remainder of the season.

Colorado Rockies -- Placed P Bruce Hurst on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Sunday. Recalled P Lance Painter from Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Houston Astros -- Triple-A Tucson placed C Tony Eusebio on the disabled list.

New York Mets -- Announced that OF Vince Coleman will remain on administrative leave and will not play again this season. Agreed to terms with P Kirk Presley, their first-round pick in the June draft. Activated P John Franco from the DL. Put IF Tim Bogar on the 15-day DL with a sprained left hand.

New York Yankees -- Optioned P Bobby Munoz to Triple-A Columbus. Recalled P Sterling Hitchcock from Columbus.

San Francisco Giants -- Transferred P Bud Black to the 60-day DL. Purchased the contract of OF Rikkert Faneyte from Triple-A Phoenix.

Seattle Mariners -- Recalled 1B-OF Marc Newfield from Double-A Jacksonville. Sent 1B Greg Pirkl to Triple-A Calgary.

Basketball

NBA -- Promoted public relations coordinator Chris Brienza to manager of media relations.

Los Angeles Lakers -- Agreed to terms with F George Lynch, their first-round pick and the 12th pick overall, to a five-year contract.

Phoenix Suns -- Signed F Cedric Ceballos, the NBA leader in field-goal percentage (.576) last season, to a five-year contract.

Colleges

Florida -- Announced that basketball F Ben Davis, hailed as the Gators' best recruit since Dwayne Schintzius in 1986, has been ruled ineligible after breaking athletic department rules.

Mount St. Mary's -- Named A. J. Russo men's lacrosse coach.

Oneonta State -- Named Joseph G. Alberici lacrosse coach.

Purdue -- Suspended RB Galen Morrow after he was arrested on a theft charge.

San Diego State -- Announced it will reinstate men's and women's golf in the 1993-94 school year.

Washington -- Gave assistant Jim Lambright a four-year contract to succeed Don James as head football coach.

Western Maryland -- Named Tim Britton, Paul Picchierri, Kris Peirson and Carl Buch assistant football coaches.

West Virginia -- Announced basketball G Seldon Jefferson and F Damon Boneparte will sit out the 1993-94 season after failing to meet NCAA eligibility guidelines.

Football

Buffalo Bills -- Restructured the contract of QB Jim Kelly.

Cincinnati Bengals -- Waived DL Tony Savage. Signed DL George Hinkle off waivers from the Minnesota Vikings.

Denver Broncos -- Waived RB Greg Lewis. Activated OT Gary Zimmerman.

Green Bay Packers -- Claimed free-agent LB Keo Coleman off waivers from the New York Jets. Waived DE Malcolm Showell.

Houston Oilers -- Gave a tryout to OT Stan Thomas.

Indianapolis Colts -- Activated QB Jeff George and LB Duane Bickett. Waived WR George Thomas and WR Jason Johnson.

Los Angeles Rams -- Waived LB Larry Kelm and WR Lynn James.

New England Patriots -- Traded RB Jon Vaughn to the Seattle Seahawks for a draft choice. Claimed three players off waivers: LB Jason Carthen from the Buffalo Bills, OL John Earle from the Kansas City Chiefs and LB Keith McCants from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Waived OL Steve Trapilo, DE Tim Edwards and LB Arnold Ale.

Phoenix Cardinals -- Traded WR Ernie Jones to the Rams for future considerations.
