POLICE

* Harpers Choice: 5400 block of Old Tucker Row: In what police called a cat burglary, someone entered a residence through an unlocked sliding glass door Wednesday night and stole a purse while the victim lay asleep on a couch nearby. The resident was awakened by noise the burglar made a short time after the theft, police said.

NB 10900 block of Little Patuxent Parkway: Office equipment was stolen from a gym office at Howard County Community College between Saturday and Monday. Police said the thief possibly used a key to enter.

* Hickory Ridge: 11900 block of New Country Lane: A thief removed a screen from a window of a home Monday, entered and took property. The residents were away on vacation at the time, police said.

10400 block of Fair Oaks: A woman returned home from vacation Saturday and found that a would-be thief had cut holes in the screen of a side window between Aug. 13 and the day she returned.

* Dorsey's Search: 5300 block of Columbia Road: An undisclosed amount of cash was taken from a business after someone pried open a rear door Sunday or Monday.
