Heath turns back Heintzelman, Ringer, wins Middle Atlantic PGA

WILLIAMSBURG, VA — WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Skeeter Heath put up a closing round of par-72, and held off charges by Larry Ringer and Webb Heintzelman to win the Ping/Middle Atlantic PGA championship at Two Rivers Country Club yesterday.

Heath, last year's MAPGA Assistants champion from Williamsburg, started the day with a two-stroke lead on Heintzelman, from Glenn Dale GC, and four on Ringer and Jack Skilling. Heath finished 68-67-72207, followed by two-time champion Ringer, head pro at the CC of Woodmore, 70-69-69208, and Heintzelman, 70-67-71208.

Woody FitzHugh, from Herndon, Va., another two-time titlist, had the low round, a 67, and finished fourth at 72-71-67210. Skilling, -- an assistant pro at Columbia CC, slipped back to sixth, 69-70-73212.

HOUSTON -- Brian Slevin of Arnold carded a second-round 74 over the Jackrabbit Course and led Middle Atlantic-area qualifiers with 70-74144. Slevin and Pat Tallent, of McLean, Va., the Baltimore sectional medalist who had 72-73145, were the only ones assured of starting in the 64-man match-play draw at the Champions Golf Club.

There was a playoff for the last spots, with 22 seeking the 11 places. When darkness suspended play, John McClure, a Baltimore qualifier from West Palm Beach, Fla., was one of 13 shooting for eight places.
