Two accused of possessing rockfish illegally

Maryland Natural Resources Police arrested two Baltimore men off Stony Creek Sunday and charged them with possessing striped bass, or rockfish, out of season.

Two officers noticed an 18-foot Starcraft open boat with its lights off anchored under the bright lights of the Baltimore Gas and Electric Co.'s Brandon Shores power plant. As the police boat approached, officers said, one person appeared to drop something over the side into the water.

During an inspection of the boat, police said, a 20-inch striped bass on a string floated to the surface next to the vessel.

John f. Kahler, 27, and Ricky J. Wilcox, 31, were charged with possession of a striped bass out of season and face fines of up to $1,500. Mr. Wilcox also was charged with failing to have a fishing license in his possession, which carries a penalty of up to $500.

The officers seized five fishing rods with reels, a landing net and assorted tackle. Both men were released on their own recognizance.
