Gunman in Nixon mask and suit robs restaurant

A gunman wearing a Richard Nixon mask and a suit and tie robbed a Severna Park restaurant Tuesday night.

The man walked into the Shangri-La Restaurant in the 500 block of Ritchie Highway at 9:10 p.m. and pointed the gun at the clerk, according to the police report, then told the clerk to open the cash register and give him the money. After the clerk complied, the man ran out and drove away in a Volkswagen Rabbit.

Academy plans fete for new building

Chesapeake Academy will hold a grand opening for its new school building Sept. 2. Founders of the school and several county officials are to attend.

The $500,000 project was begun in May by Nova Construction and has been completed in time for fall classes, said Cheryl Schmidt, director of admissions and development for the private elementary school.

The building contains six classrooms and a large multipurpose room with a stage. It will contain the two kindergarten classes, two third-grade classes, and the fourth and fifth grade classes, Ms. Schmidt said.

"We needed this building very desperately, especially since we're adding a second third grade this fall," Ms. Schmidt said. "We had people working around the clock to be done by the opening of school."
