Man, 18, faces drug and traffic charges after crash

An 18-year-old Mount Airy teen-ager who did not have a driver's license was arrested on drug charges early Saturday after speeding his motorcycle past police in Ellicott City and crashing in a culvert near Route 94, Howard County police said.

Daniel Francis Mackie, 18, of the 700 block of W. Watersville Road, was released on his own recognizance. His charges included possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, speeding, attempting to elude police and driving on a learner's permit without supervision.

Shortly after midnight on Saturday, an officer on routine patrol clocked Mr. Mackie traveling at 103 mph in a 55 mph zone, police said. The officer tried to stop the motorcycle, but the vehicle continued west on Route 40 near Turf Valley Country Club, eventually turning onto Interstate 70.

The driver passed another patrol car before exiting on Route 94 near Lisbon, where officers lost sight of him. Police said they located the driver and motorcycle in a nearby ditch following a crash.

The suspect was taken to Montgomery County General, where he was treated and released to police. Police searched the man, finding a marijuana pipe and rolling papers, a police spokesman said.
