Members of Laurel family are accused in break-ins

Two members of a Laurel family were being held in the Howard County Detention Center yesterday, charged with commiting several thefts in the Laurel area.

They and a third family member were arrested Friday by Howard County police. The third member was released on bond.

Being held were Joseph Edward Sewell, 31, and Kathleen Sewell, 32, both of the 9400 block of North 2nd St.

Mr. Sewell was charged with two counts of breaking and entering -- in a burglary shortly after 9:30 a.m. Friday in the 9200 block of Glen Ridge Drive and a breaking and entering that occurred around 10 a.m. in the Whiskey Bottom area. He was being held on $100,000 bond. Police said he may be responsible for other burglaries in the North Laurel area.

Kathleen Sewell was being held on $2,000 bond yesterday. Another family member, Patricia Sewell, 25, also of the North 2nd Street address, was released on $1,000 bond Saturday, a court commissioner said. The women were arrested on unrelated theft warrants, police said.

Police said that shortly after 10 a.m. Friday they received a call from a resident in the 9500 block of Whiskey Bottom who reported that when he returned home from work he found a man hiding in a closet. The resident told police that the man told him that his car had broken down and that he had entered the home to use the phone.

The man identified himself by a false name and left the scene on a bike, police said. The resident gave police a description of the man.

Less than a half-hour earlier, police said, a resident of a home on Glen Ridge Drive had found a man standing in the kitchen and a window of the home shattered. That intruder also had left the scene on a bike, police said.

Police said that Mr. Sewell was arrested based on descriptions.
