Two Carroll County men were killed last night when the pickup truck they were riding in crashed into trees alongside Trevanian Road in Taneytown after a pickup truck that had been tailgating them struck their vehicle, State Police at Westminster said.

Pronounced dead at the scene from multiple massive injuries was Thomas Alan Wiles, 23, of the 1500 block of Crouse Mill Road, the driver of a 1993 GMC pickup truck, and his passenger, Wayne Eugene Harley Jr., 22, of the 4000 block of Baptist Road, both of Taneytown.

Police said Chad Christopher Pollard, 22, of the first block of Big Pipe Road, Taneytown, was driving a 1993 Ford pickup truck and was following Mr. Wiles at high speed north on Trevanian Road south of Big Pipe Road at 9:45 p.m. when Mr. Pollard swerved to avoid hitting the back of the other truck and entered the southbound lane.

There, Mr. Pollard swerved back into the northbound lane to avoid hitting an oncoming vehicle that passed by him.

Upon reentering the northbound lane, police said, Mr. Pollard's truck skidded and ran into Mr. Wiles' pickup truck, causing it to spin out of control and strike a tree on the passenger's side.

The impact, police said, caused the pickup truck to spin counter-clockwise before the driver's side crashed into a second tree.

Both men, police said, were still seated in the vehicle and were dead before police and firefighters arrived.

Police said Mr. Pollard was not injured. Autopsies were to be performed to determine if the use of drugs or alcohol contributed to the deaths, police said.
