MARY LOUISE POOLE of Westminster works in the admissions office at Western Maryland College and is organizing a campuswide collection of aid packages for victims of the Midwest floods.

The materials will be distributed by Church World Service, an interdenominational organization in Indiana.

Ms. Poole has arranged for packages assembled by college staff to be stored at Carroll Hall until they can be taken to a collection point at the New Windsor Service Center.

In Westminster, packages may be taken to the Westminster United Methodist Church office.

Organization's comments: "She's a very outgoing person," said Diane Arbutis, secretary at Westminster United Methodist Church, where Ms. Poole has been a member for many years. "She sort of latches onto projects."

Volunteer's comments: "Our [admissions] office did a campuswide collection for Hurricane Andrew" victims last year, Ms. Poole said. "We've had a good response from a number of offices."

She said she learned about the project at church.

"I just really feel so sorry for those people," she said. "It's going to be a long haul for [them]."

She said she liked the idea of including personal notes with the aid packages. She said the notes must be carefully written, so as to let flood victims know that people care, without making recipients feel desperate or needy.

Volunteer's background: Ms. Poole is a member of Westminster United Methodist Church, and has taught Sunday school for 22 years and sung in church choirs since childhood.

She is a member of the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Westminster Fire Department and a former member of the Venture Club, a service group sponsored by the Soroptimists. To nominate someone as Volunteer of the Week, call 751-7900 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
