Local groups seek performers, artists

A number of Baltimore area choruses and orchestras are preparing for their 1993-1994 season by holding auditions for new members.

The Baltimore Choral Arts Society, directed by Tom Hall, will hold auditions Sept. 7 and 9 for experienced singers wishing to join the full chorus. The chorus rehearses Monday evenings and will perform 12 concerts this season, including works by Bach, Rossini and Rutter and an appearance with the King's Singers. The Baltimore Symphony Chorus, directed by Edward Polochick, will hold auditions for experienced singers throughout September. The season includes works by Elgar, Rachmaninoff, Handel, Beethoven and Broadway pops composers. To schedule audition, call (410) 655-0997.

The University of Maryland Chorus, directed by Paul Traver at the university's College Park campus, will audition new members on Aug. 28, 29 and 30. The season includes works by Bach,

The Canticle Singers, a women's classical-music chorus, is looking for new members. Fall rehearsals begin at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 7 at the Central Presbyterian Church, 7308 York Road. For details, call (410) 828-7922.

The Community Chorus at Essex Community College, directed by Charlotte Anderson, is seeking new members. Rehearsals are held Monday evenings at Essex. For details and to register for the chorus, call (410) 780-6521.

The Baltimore Symphonic Band at Essex Community College, directed by Chris Wolfe, will hold open auditions at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 14 in T-15, the temporary building between the Humanities and Arts building and the Administration building on campus. Auditions for the Hopkins Symphony Orchestra, comprised of Hopkins students, alumni and staff as well as members of the general community, are scheduled for Sept. 10 and 11. Auditions for new members of the Maryland Youth Symphony Orchestra will be held Saturdays Aug. 28-Sept. 18 at Catonsville Community College. For an audition time, call (410) 442-5645.


The New Metropolitan Theatre Company, a non-profit arts collective in Baltimore, needs lighting, sound and other technical and production workers for an Eartha Kitt concert on Sept. 17. The company is also looking for people interested in arts administration. For details, call (410) 685-9428.


The Jewish Community Center will hold auditions for "A Shayne Maidel" from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 30 and from 2 p.m. to 4 Sept. 12 at the JCC, 5700 Park Heights Ave. The production calls for a teen-age girl, two women in their 20s, one woman aged 35-50, one man aged 25-35 and one man over the age of 60. The Moonlight Troupers of Anne Arundel Community College will hold auditions for a November production of "Cabaret" at 7 p.m. Sept. 13 and 14 in the college's Pascal Center for the Performing Arts. The cast calls for four males, three females and a large ensemble. Auditioners should prepare a song to show their vocal range and bring sheet music for an accompanist. Regional artists can submit proposals for three installation exhibitions at School 33 Art Center in South Baltimore. The show dates are Jan. 29 through March 4, March 19 through April 22, and May 7 through June 10. The deadline for submitting applications is 4 p.m. Sept. 18. The proposals, which may be written by individuals or groups, will be selected by multimedia artist Felix Gonzales-Torres.

Artists are also invited to submit work for a juried exhibition at School 33 next spring. Curated by Alice Yang, assistant curator at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, the exhibition will run March 19 through April 22. Deadline for applications is 4 p.m. Oct. 30. The Beverly Hills Theatre Guild is seeking unproduced plays for its annual Julie Harris Playwright Competition. Open to aspiring as well as professional U.S. playwrights, the national event offers prizes of $5,000, $3,000 and $1,000. Entry deadline is Nov. 1.
