2& Rangers update Rangers statistics

The Rangers arrive in Baltimore very much alive in the American League West race, where they are in third place, 1 1/2 games behind the second-place Kansas City Royals and 3 1/2 behind the front-running Chicago White Sox. Orioles fans likely will be eager to see Nolan Ryan's final appearance in Baltimore tomorrow, but the Orioles' struggling pitching staff can't be eager to welcome the Rangers' hard-hitting lineup. Even without injured Jose Canseco, Texas brings three of the top power hitters in the game: Juan Gonzalez (36 homers, 91 RBI), Rafael Palmeiro (30, 84) and Dean Palmer (23, 73).

Orioles update The Orioles must be happy to be home after a horrible road trip that may have eliminated them from serious consideration in the AL East. When they left, the Orioles were in the midst of their second-longest winning streak of the season and on the threshold of the division lead. Now, they are in fourth place and trail the first-place Toronto Blue Jays by 6 1/2 games. The return of injured Mike Mussina tonight should give the club a lift, but it may be too little too late. The Orioles might have too many key players (Gregg Olson, Chris Hoiles, Leo Gomez and Jeffrey Hammonds) on the disabled list to be competitive.
