Development grant OK'd for Sykesville park

The state Board of Public Works has given formal approval to a development grant for a seven-acre park in Sykesville.

The board is providing $18,600 to complete the first phase of construction at Burkett Park, along Norris Avenue at the west end of town. The county and the town will each contribute $3,000, bringing the total to nearly $25,000.

Grant money will go to engineering and architectural fees. Any remaining money will pay for improvements on the site, which is surrounded by new developments. In two years, the town can apply for more grant money from the state Department of Natural Resources to complete the project.

* Sykesville: Units from the Sykesville station responded for an alarm sounding in a building on Northgate Lane at 11:18 a.m. They were out for 16 minutes.
